Teresa Almeida d'Eça - Bridging L1 and L2 - Portugal
I'm Teresa Almeida d'Eça, a retired EFL teacher and a certified teacher trainer in the areas of Web 2.0 tools and Innovation in Education, among others. I give Professional Development workshops both online and face-to-face. You're welcome to visit my edtek4tchrz wiki with tutorials on different communication tools for language learning.
Ten years ago I came up with a very simple pronunciation system for my beginner to intermediate students. This system "bridges" the L1 (Portuguese) and the L2 (English). In other words, it creates a highly effective link between the native language and the foreign language.
With each new group of students, I wrote sounds of "problem" words on the board. When the pronunciation was correct at different moments of the lesson, it became a recipe for success. Very soon it was the students themselves coming up with the sounds, a challenging and enjoyable activity. My "pronunciation made easy" strategy worked very well.
Thanks to the recently created "Radical English" Alliance, I'm currently working on an e-dictionary with over 3,000 words. Each word has an "easy" pronunciation based on Portuguese sounds followed by the meaning in Portuguese. My target audience is Portuguese(-speaking) teachers and students of English of any age.
